Facts About Ear Disease

Most Chronic and peracute ear problems will have ruptured eardrums.

• All ear cleaning and drying products plus treatments with Gentocin and Neomtcin are OTO-toxic in perforated eardrum situations. These products cause damage to the pet's ear inner ear and cause inflammation of the middle ear.

• A bacterium called Pseudomonas is the major cause of infected ears. It is extremely resistant to most common antibiotics. Malassezia a yeast is also involved in most ear diseases.

• In order to treat ear disease with out doing more damage a veterinarian needs to see whether the eardrum is patent.

• We are sure that most clients have had experience of reducing ear problems, or heard friends talk about them. To combat
this problem we have acquired an Earscope, basically a camera that transmits images to a monitor, and can be used to flush/clean/suction the outer ear canals and the middle ear.

• Your pet will need to be anesthetized for these procedures.

• What we offer our clients with this equipment plus the knowledge Dr. Raleigh has acquired at specialized seminars on ear disease is an accurate diagnosis of the pet's ear problem and the most up to date treatment. Nothing more nothing less.

• Sedate pet.

• Obtain a swab from ears to determine causative organism.

• Using the videoscope check the ear canals and see whether an eardrum is present.

• If an eardrum is present we proceed to clean the vertical and horizontal canals of the outer ear, with an intact eardrum we can use a powerful cleaning agent Clear'rx. We clean/scrape/flush and suction these canals.

• If the eardrums are absent, we are presented with otitis media or middle ear infection. We cannot use cleaners in this situation so we use a process o continual flushing and suction with this sterile water to clean out the middle ear. As you can see from the attached diagram this is like a bony, bowl, with the eardrum gone all the inflammatory products from infection fill this and cause a persistent recurring problem. All the deposit needs to be cleaned out of the ear.

• We then deposit a powerful steroid with enrofloxacin as an antibiotic directly into the middle ear.

Flushing cleaning if needed as above

Unfortunately middle ear disease will require at least two visits. We intended doing our best for your pet. To clear up inflammation of the middle ear requires intense cleaning and flushing repeat checking with possible flushing and cleaning. There is no point in treating this condition without ensuring a clean middle ear. The eardrum regenerates but if it does and closes off an infected middle ear it is going to breakdown again and again. If the eardrum is intact, and the pet has only external ear disease, a recheck without anesthesia will be required to ensure the infection is gone.

Pets with perforated eardrums and middle ear disease need to be checked at approximately, 10 days, and will probably need reflushing and treatment.

All pets are sent home with medications relevant to their particular problem.
